PRISTINA, 6 August 2003 - Construction of a primary health care centre in Gjilan/Gnjilane municipality serving the Serbian and Albanian communities of Gornji Livoc/Livoq i Eperm has been completed with the funding provided by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo (OMiK).

Through a grant from the OSCE's Small Investment Minorities Fund (SIMF), the mixed village, with 140 Kosovo Serb residents, will benefit from a functioning local centre, or ambulanta, providing medical assistance.

"This project, the building of an ambulanta, has been a fruitful co-operation as both communities were involved in the design of the project, with the municipality playing a crucial role in its implementation," said Lola Ansede, OSCE Democratization Officer in Gjilan/Gnjilane. "The health service to all villagers, especially the Kosovo Serbs, will now improve."

The SIMF was established by the Dutch Ministry for Development Co-operation in collaboration with OMiK. It aims to ensure a dignified future for all ethnic communities in Kosovo and support the integration of smaller communities into society.

To ensure the sustainability of the health centre, the municipal administration of Gjilan/Gnjilane will provide the necessary equipment, hire the staff and maintain the building.

Through such confidence-building measures, the OSCE promotes reconciliation and tolerance, which are important to the integration of communities and building a democratic society.
