PRISTINA, 10 March 2000 - The first meeting of registered non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Kosovo is taking place this weekend, with the aid of the OSCE. The meeting will establish the NGO Council of Kosovo, a representative body for all registered public associations.

The OSCE is strongly supportive of the Council which will serve as a focal point for members of the increasingly large NGO community in Kosovo. The council will promote co-operation and support for the more than 150 organizations which have applied to register as NGOs.

Saturday's meeting will see several democratic elections take place including a vote on a founding document which will state its purposes and rules. It will also elect a president and executive board. The OSCE will supervise the secret ballot.

The council will also nominate three people to be considered as a non-voting observer on the Interim Administrative Council (IAC) and two people for the Central Election Commission.

The OSCE supports the development of democratic institutions in Kosovo and welcomes the commitment of the NGO Council in establishing itself as a transparent, democratic organization.

Note: The media are welcome to attend the meeting which will take place at KFOR Press Centre at 10:30, 11th March
